How to Choose Clothes for Petite, Plus-Size Women

By Meieli Sawyer, About.com

Are you shorter in stature but still 14+? This can be tough, but with a little hunting and a close relationship with your tailor, you'll be well on your way to being a supremely stylish diva.

Understand Your Proportions

While fashion "rules" were meant to be broken, let's imagine that these below are merely suggestions to guide your shopping experience.

  • Tops:

Do you have a slight tummy that you'd like to conceal? While shirts may be longer on you as a general rule, look for swing-shaped blazers that skim around your middle paired with longer tops layered underneath.

Add height to your frame with subtle vertical elements. This doesn't need to be stripes, but instead you can try more feminine tops with tiny lace edging running down the bodice, or a shirt with embroidery or edging in a similar pattern.

  • Trousers:

Look for petite plus-sized trousers, or develop a close relationship with your tailor to get you the right look.

The same suggestions for your trousers can apply no matter what your shape. If you have larger hips, find slightly wider trousers to help balance you out, or you can wear slimmer, skinny trousers paired with similarly colored shoes to add length to your legs.

  • Skirts:

Try skirts that are slightly on the shorter side, such as around the knee. To give you a little wiggle room in the hips, aim for a skirt with an a-line silhouette or a skirt with ruched details to show off a few curves modestly.

Long skirts may drag you down, but you can pull off slightly longer skirts if you wear tops that are slightly on the shorter side instead of tunic length.

Tip: One skirt type that I'd avoid is a pleated one. They add width to your hips and may not look age-appropriate, particularly when paired with your height.
