Athletic Body Type Guide

By Meieli Sawyer, About.com

You may have difficulty determining what body type you have, and the best way to highlight and flatter your plus-size frame. Even when everything's looking unappealing, that doesn't mean that you won't be able to find something that looks right on you.

Important considerations to take when you're choosing clothes for your athletic body:

1. Do you really have an athletic body type?

You certainly don't want to be dressing for a body that you don't have. While athletic shapes are one of the rarer feminine forms, we plus-size women may be taller and more muscular than our smaller-sized counterparts, which means that our backs may be wider and our hip and stomach measurements may be similar.

2. Review your needs.

While you may have the same body type as another woman, you certainly don't have the same closet! You'll need to check yours out to determine what you'll need for an upcoming season.

Don't forget that tops are key to changing the way your shape is perceived. You can make your waist look smaller, your bust bigger, and your figure more shapely with a simple top in the right proportions.

3. Do you live in jeans?

If you love jeans but you have fit issues or concerns, you shouldn't give up these very versatile trousers. Denim looks good with every top, and if you choose your jeans wisely, you can look inches taller, emphasize your muscle tone, and give yourself that hourglass figure that you love.

4. Living in a colder climate?

Me too. Adding layers can make you feel and look larger than you are, so aim for coats that look right on your body.

5. Know what stores sell your style.

Look for shops that offer lots of styles that fit athletic bodies:
