Fun Looks from a Bygone Age

Dressing Up Like a Film Star

By , About.com Guide

Are you a stylish woman who’s looking for a new look? Try these themed styles on for size.

1. The 1920s Vamp

Wear your hair down and curly with a little pomade, and then slick some lipstick on your lips. Roll your “stockings” down or go barelegged, and then aim for clothes with a long, low shape instead of the curvy look. Wear chiffon, beaded fabrics, and silk, eschewing all synthetics. The Egyptian look was hot, so adorn your hair with some interesting insect-themed additions and put some kohl around your eyes. Points for you if you can pull of the t-back shoe style.

2. The 1930s Style Puss

The Great Depression as inspiration? Too uncouth. Instead, try wearing a back-baring, beautiful gown that sweeps the floor, or, if you want to dress for day and for a more casual occasion, a romper or a dip-back top. Wear heavily tinted sunglasses and carry a straw purse for the casual look, and for the night-out-on-the-town style? Stick to something a little more decade-appropriate, like a simple purse that clips to the waist, leaving the hands totally free. You are most likely to find something like this on Etsy.

3. The 1940s Make-Do-and-Mend

Make a man’s suit your own by trying the 1940s make-do-and-mend look. Wear a tweed man’s tailored suit and cinch the waist with a good leather belt. Wear stockings and carry a leather purse in an inconspicuous color. Wear sturdy shoes and try sweeping back one side of your hair for a more glamorous look.

4. The 1950s Glamour Queen

You need a sweater set, all the way, with a full skirt and a fun pair of open-toed heels. Carry a sweet beaded clutch -- not too big, now -- and make it really sing with chunky cocktail earrings and a matching necklace. Think elegant debutante meets sweater girl meets office glam girl, and you’re on the right track. In my mind, this look is worn with a pair of horn-rimmed glasses to make the glam bit all the more ironic. Could you pull off this look?

5. The 1960s Mod-Inspired Look

Go for a mod look with a mini, no stockings, and low-heels shoes or boots. Bright colors and a geometric style go far, as do flippy hairstyles and slightly nude lipstick. A basic shift and a ton of black eye makeup can go far, so don’t be afraid to experiment. I would look for a dress in bright yellow, vibrant blue, hot pink, or chartreuse, for starters. If you sew, this will also be a supremely easy look to fashion yourself.

6. The 1970s Wild Child

Jeans, please! Wide-legged jeans have found their home with chunky shoes and a tooled leather purse. With your hair swept back with a kerchief and minimal makeup, you’ll be channeling the 1970s in no time. You can look for fine-rib henleys or fringed vests if you are more daring, but these also can emphasize a sartorial misstep if you don’t know your stuff.

7. The 1980s Pretty in Pink Moment

Okay, we all know that the Pretty in Pink prom dress was the ugliest thing ever. But Andy herself had some interesting moments, style-wise, with lots of soft pink layers and florals and hats and earrings. Translate that look into something more modern, and you are golden. Sometimes a literal translation is not necessary -- this would be one of those times!

8. The 1990s Friends Style

Do you remember when Rachel got the job in Bloomingdale’s and started to wear her miniskirt suits and long coats? That’s not a bad look to be translated to a night out in the winter -- and you don’t need to sport the “Rachel,” either.
