How to Shop Effectively at JCPenneyPhoto (c) JCPenney
Plus-size fit problems can be a real concern, but we try our best to make up for our difficulties with some real-life, on-location shopping when we can. After a significant amount of time not shopping at my local JCPenneys, I gave it a shot. Here's how to make the most of your trip!

Planning the Attack

The good thing about JCPenney is that it's pretty easy to get a lay of the land. No matter where you are (when you need something nice, and fast), you can go into a JCPenney store and get something quick. The lower amount of navigation time makes this store a time-saver.

If you're really pressed for time, JCPenney is a good pick because you can race through larger aisles and grab items in the periphery without having to navigate cluttered boutiques and smaller mall areas. In addition, if you go during a quiet time, you are far more likely to find an assistant to help you.

Know What to Look For

Every store has its strengths. I think that JCPenney is best suited for plus outerwear (they have some of the most divine leather goods) and purses. I recommend getting basics at a shop like Target (plain jeans and a tee) and then getting "toppers" and accessories at JCPenney. They are affordable, but they are often very detailed, design-wise.

One of the most impressive items I found at JCPenney this season was a lambskin leather jacket. Even at full price, this jacket was about $300 less than comparable brands you'd find online at Shopbop, Couture Candy, and Revolve, but it fits better, is available in extended sizes, and allows you to try it on in person.

Try These Methods for Bargains

JCPenney offers some surprising items of "luxury quality" for a lower price point. Look slightly over a mid-level budget for pieces that are amazingly high in quality and long-wearing.

My favorite brands carried at JCPenney, in terms of value for money, are A.N.A. and Worthington, which you can find in extended sizes. If you prefer to shop online, you can still use "quick shopping strategies" to find what you want quickly. Both of these brands are featured on the website in the upper lefthand corner with fast links for shopping.

Pleasantly surprised lately!, Member carolleah

I haven't shopped at JCP regularly, as their clothing always seemed to be made for a much older lady's tastes. (I always have thought of JCP as polyester heaven - yikes) Recently, I went w/ my mother (she had a coupon burning a hole in her pocket! lol!), and was really surprised at what I found! The A.N.A. brand had lots of very cute, fresh looking items at amazing prices; I found several embroidered T-shirts (not polyester!) at great prices. I also found a pair of St.John's Bay jeans in women's sizing, which fit better than any other pair I've ever owned, & are trouser-style so I can actually wear them for ""dress-up"" jeans. What I did NOT find: Extremely trendy items, such as deconstructed/distressed jeans, hand-painted Ts or shoes, etc. If your preference is for the much more fashion-forward, extremely trendy clothing, then you probably won't be happy with JCP. If you are comfortable in items that *reflect* fashion trends while still having a bit more of a classic feel, then you'l probablyl find hordes of quality garments at great prices. For the young woman with the unused gift card, perhaps she could check out the accessory dept? I found some killer necklaces and earrings which were actually far more trendy than the garments in the plus-sized clothing. They had enormous chunky statement necklaces, and lots fabulous shoulder-length earrings, which I've seen my 20-something friends wearing. Just a thought! :)
