This "How-To" isn't the type that requires you to pull out the scissors or find the glue: it's an exercise in choosing the right undergarments to make you look years younger.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 10 - 20 minutes
Here's How:
- Get yourself measured first. If you're hunting for bras, knowing the right size to buy is essential. If your wavering between a DD and a DDD, for example, that can guide where you'll purchase the bulk of your bras.
- Start shopping in person. If there's one thing that I've learned about strapless bras, it's that the "bounce test" is best accomplished in public.
- Go for trusted or recommended brands when shopping. No matter how revolutionary it says that it is, you'll never know what to expect if you've never even heard about the brand itself. Two recommended brands are Olga and Connie Elder, which I have had luck with in the past.
- Look for rubber inside. This is an essential component that we don't find enough in bras promised to fit perfectly. Soft, malleable rubber is ideal, and should run along the top and bottom inside seams of the bra.
- Say "no" to soft or seamless bras. I know that this sounds mean and somewhat unnecessary, but microfiber bandeaus are likely to cut into your upper bust and make you look like you've been cut in half. Underwire helps with uplift and comfort, and if you buy the right bra, it will actually feel more comfortable.
- Narrow down pieces that fit the above characteristics, and then examine the details. Look for something lightly lined for modesty purposes, and look for bras that come in your preferred colors. If you'll be wearing it often, you might want to look for one in nude.
- Make a commitment to keep hunting. It took me five years to find one that I loved, but I have a feeling that I took more time than most people to discover the right one-- because I looked in the wrong places! Check below for suggested brands if you need some direction.
- When you find a strapless bra that you like, make note of the style and buy more than one! Once you wear your piece for a season, you'll be wondering where exactly you bought it and what exactly the name was-- don't let what happened to me happen to you!
