Plus-Friendly Spring 2009 Trends

By , About.com Guide

Looking for the right spring 2009 trends for you? Here are the top 10 that I recommend-- I'll be adding 10 more next week to really get us started. I've included shopping links for you to see what I loved-- and what you can buy right now.

1. Detail: Embellishments

This spring 2009 trend is easy for anyone above size 12/14. Choose embellishment in a sparkly style that highlights your best assets-- perhaps around the bust or hemline?

2. Color: Gray

One of the easiest trends to pull off, grey is a plus woman's friend. Look for shapely pieces to offset the potentially glommy vibe, or look for a piece with feminine elements such as rosettes and ruffles.

3. Fabric: Sheers

Sheers are hot, and you don't need to stress about this look. Look for a lined or double-lined top in a sleeveless style to layer easily underneath cropped jackets and shrugs.

4. Print: Florals

Florals weren't as bright or as bold for next spring, and that's good. How often have we seen giant blooms all over a dress and just shuddered with the thought of wearing it? A medium-sized floral print in muted colors isn't just trendy, but it is more flattering.

5. Color: Bright Blue

Bright blue was an extremely strong trend on the spring 2009 runways, including cobalt shades in dresses and tops. Some women don't want to wear head-to-toe bright colors, so I'm thinking a shapely top is in order for us in 2009!

6. Print: Graphic, Op-Art

Splashes of graphic patterns made their way onto the runway in a variety of retro designs. Look for a dress or a top with details of graphic prints or strong lines to try this trend without being overwhelmed. If you choose the right lines, this can also be very slimming.

7. Color: Pink

Fuchsia may have been king, but let's try something slightly more muted shades. . . think ripe berry instead of neon pink! For a no-fail choice, consider a jacket or accessory that's easy to throw on.

8. Detail: Ruffles

Ruffles are a scary trend for those of us looking to appear slimmer and trick the eye. Aim for tiny ruffle details at necklines, hemlines, seams, and cuffs instead of the voluminous stuff that popped up everywhere for spring.

9. Must-Have: White

Hunt down crisp, springy white for work and for play. White dresses made their may onto the scene in a big way, but you can also get tops on sale and channel the trend for less.

10. Accessory: Bold Jewelry

Big, chunky necklaces in metals and plastics showed up with open-necked shirts. Look for ones with average-sized loops to flatter your body type. You can grab one in metal to lie a little flatter against your body.
