Head to your local thrift store.

This Lane Bryant Satin Striped Shirt is an example of a great thrift store find on which you can base a whole ensemble.

Consider your options. Check out the layout of the shop and identify your "plan of action" around the store.

  • Make a Plan: I usually consider what I build my wardrobe around. In my case, I usually develop my outfit around a dress shirt or pair of shoes, so I begin there to start developing my work wardrobe.

  • Get Thrifty: It's important to note any sales or specials before you begin shopping. Deep discounts can make some pieces much more attractive or worthwhile. If you find a shirt half off, you may decide to go to a tailor to have a certain piece altered to fit better.

  • Look in Unexpected Places: Don't confine yourself to the plus-size section when shopping for office clothes. You'd be surprised what gets mixed in during daily browsing, as well as how many items are mistagged and miscategorized.
