Plus-Size Palazzo and Gaucho Pants

Looks for the Beach & for the Weekend

By Meieli Sawyer, About.com

Palazzo and gaucho pants have me surprised this season. They're available in lots of different colors and styles, and I think they're worth checking out. While we love, love, love those wide-legged jeans and trousers, some of us are a little more apprehension towards these types of pants. Let's look at some pieces that will definitely work this season, as well as two fail-safe pairs of longer shorts.

1. Ruched Waist Gauchos

These gaucho pants are great for several occasions-- one of the very best being post-beach. With lots of gusts about, you don't want to be wearing a skirt! Gauchos are easy to pack in your beach bag and look amazing with tunic styled cover-ups.

2. INC International Concept Skimmers

These skimmers are a good departure from gauchos if you just won't wear them! These have a fantastically wide-legged silhouette and are work-appropriate if you want them to do double-duty with your weekend gear. I'd also wear these along the boardwalk with wedges and a slim tank if I were headed out for drinks. Don't forget your clutch!

3. Gwynn Gauchos

Wow-- a rich pink pair of gaucho pants could attract those of us who already have plenty of wide-legged trousers in black and brown. These trousers hit at mid-calf and could easily be dressed up with metallics: gold laced ballerina flats and a clutch!

4. Caslon Roll Cuff Crop Pants

This is another compromise for gaucho and palazzo skeptics-- an easy roll-cuff pair in a nice neutral color for work. I have other plans for this, though: I would like to wear them with my new bikini top along the shore. They have that old-fashioned clam digger look that looks awesome with checks and plaids.

5. Maternity Knit Gauchos

Pregnant ladies, I have something here for you, too. It can be hard to feel comfy in tailored shorts, and that belly band is pretty inviting for women who crave comfort. Just slip into flats with these ones from Lane Bryant.

6. Emily Gauchos

Full-legged trousers are fantastic when sized generously, and I'm a particular fan of these from SWAK Designs because they're soft and affordable, without topstitching or oversized waistbands like other pairs I've tried from some other brands. They're certainly an "essential" basic.
