Trouser Fit Tips

Excerpts from My JCPenney Interview

By , About.com Guide

I recently sat down with JCPenney to learn about what they're doing for plus women this year, and they listed some important jeans, trouser, and general pant fit tips.

1. Check your back pocket placement.

"Back pockets definitely help to make the butt look smaller by breaking up the appearance of the back side. When pockets are closer together and placed slightly higher up, they tend to have a narrowing effect."

2. Consider wide-waistband trousers.

"Wide waist band jeans and pants can also make your butt look smaller, since they cut the entire seat area horizontally. [...] Visually [that makes] it look smaller."

3. Examine back pocket design.

"Back pocket design that has emphasis towards the inner portion of the pockets draws your eye to the center of the butt and helps it to appear smaller."

4. Know which cuts are most flattering.

"The most flattering leg opening is still the bootcut, as it balances out wider hips. However, straight and skinny legs are definitely on trend, and in stretchy fabrications, they are flattering on women of all sizes. They also look fantastic with tunics, which is a must-have top of the season!"

5. Know a trick or two.

"A slenderizing secret in the make of a jean or pant is when the inner pocket bags are sewn all the way into the fly (so they are long horizontally). This can help smooth your tummy. You can find this feature in several St. John's Bay products (denim and cord) as well as Lee products (denim and twill) on our floor currently."

6. Stretch is key.

"Finally, look for lots of stretch in the fabric! This helps flatter all shapes and sizes."
