6 Fit Tips for Plus-Size Jeans

By Meieli Sawyer, About.com

Finding jeans to fit you can be an effort at best, especially when you feel like you're searching the internet in vain. If you're not quite sure where to start, consider these basic tips to get you on your way.

Consider Lycra/Stretch:

Stretch jeans are one of the best ways to enjoy your shapely frame. If you're often suffering from sagging waistbands, loose rears, or drooping hems halfway through the day, jeans with even 1 percent of stretch will really help.

Junior Cuts are Great, But Not Low-Cut:

Mid-cut jeans are great, and they're even better if you're looking for midsection coverage. If you find junior plus jeans that work for you, aim for higher-waisted fits that will flatter easily without binding around your midsection.

Bootcut Aren't Always Best:

Sometimes bootcut jeans are overrated. Before they become your "go-to" jeans, consider straight leg jeans if you are petite, and do try on a pair of two of the wide-legged variety if you're on the taller side.

Consider "Made for You" Options:

Stop by sources like Zafu and Make Your Jeans for a little extra advice. You can skip guesswork and go straight to styles that you know you'll love. You'll still be taking a slight chance by shopping online, but you'll feel more confident about the fit before trying them on.

Check Out the Pockets:

Always pay attention to the pockets on your jeans. Size 12 or 20, the "no pockets" look can be challenging and often won't look quite right. Try welt pockets if you prefer a clean back.

Get Your Inseam:

Take the time to find jeans in longer lengths. Letting down jeans, while being inexpensive, can truly affect the way your jeans look and feel.
