Did you know that JoAnn Fabrics offers sewing classes? Even if you've never sat at a sewing machine, you can sign yourself up for a few classes this fall and save a ton of money on quality garments as you start to learn how to sew separates like sleeveless blouses (great for layering under cardigans in the fall) and pencil skirts.
I went through a phase for a few years when I was convinced that sewing wasn't going to save you much, and it wasn't worth the time. Correction: it is! After seeing a good round of this year's plus-size offerings, I know that the quality is low for many companies offering plus pieces at a price point of $60 or less. There are exceptions, but in general, you can buy better fabric and create a custom garment for less.
Sewing might seem like an old-fashioned pastime, but having an amazing wardrobe on the cheap is not. If you have serious budget constraints, find someone to teach you how to sew your first skirt, and you'll be on your way--and only getting better with time.
For inspiration, I like to go to Burdastyle. They have plus-size pattern options that are print-at-home, which means you don't even need to spring for a pattern in the stores or online. I like this cute dress, offered in plus, as well as this cute top. A cool sewing blog (not plus, but very inspirational) is Casey's Musings.

There are lots of inspirational plus size sewing blogs out there! You can check out mine, but if my style isn’t your taste, check out my sewing blogger buddies in my links on the sidebar. Many of my favorites are likewise plus. I do vote for checking out Casey’s blog to. She IS adorable, and she’s in my links too.
Cool! I will check your blog out, as well as your friends’ blogs!
I like to sew my own clothes, because they are made better and last much longer. Even if it costs the same to make a dress as buy one, it is still a better value.
