Since When Is This Okay?

Wednesday November 11, 2009

I ran into something this week that really made my blood boil: a feature from Celebuzz called "Celebs: What If They Were Fat?" Basically, celebrities were Photoshopped with extra poundage, and people were invited to comment on the faux plus-size gallery of A-listers. Naturally, 90% of the commentary was absolutely horrible, from "ew" to incredibly disturbing remarks.

Even as we finish up 2009, there are still some people who think that making fun of someone with extra weight is acceptable. Celeb gossip isn't usually PC, but there are certain lines you simply don't cross.

This is the piece--disgusting. Let me know what you think about it (and the comments) after you take a look at the offending item.

a number of thoughts ran through my mind…

“wow this is some bad photoshop”
“posh still looks good…actually better!”

but overall…i thought, they look like everyday people. it just put into perspective that the people that we put in the limelight are typically NOT like everyone else. seeing them with the extra weight made them look more common to me. i don’t know if that’s terrible or not, but just how i felt.

I know, Posh did look good, but boy– did this rub me the wrong way! It’s making it okay (and funny) to laugh at people with extra poundage… and is just driving home the fact that any extra weight is not welcome on an A-lister.

I actually thought the well-photoshopped ones were pretty good looking, like all the models we see in plus-size fashion. The comments are super-harsh and proves my theory that plus-size is the last frontier of un-political-correctness.

I agree, disgusting. I can see why you would be upset by it.

I don’t understand how someone would think it would be ok to do this.

Part of celebrity culture and celebrity worship is dehumanization while trying to identify. Also, there are just some stupid people out there – and when they have weight gain, they will perpetuate some stupid. The best way to combat it is a)to make it clear that so-and-so sucks (not that it will be received and to b)out-awesome the losers. That’s just the way it works.

Charming (said sarcastically). Stay classy, Celebuzz.

first of all the photoshopping was horrible.. if they’re going to try to pull something like that they need to hire someone who can do a good job- hell, i’d do a better job. secondly, most of the women looked so so much better! I always look at celebrities and think they look grossly thin or just not sexy- pretty, sure, but not someone i would sleep with. But I look at these women and I suddenly understand the concept of lusting after celebrities- if only they looked this hot in real life.
